Yuriko M. Shikai

Ms. Shikai joined Neufeld Marks in April 2007 and provides legal services in general civil litigation, including business/commercial litigation, contracts, real estate, specific performance, corporate governance, insurance, and related matters. She currently represents business enterprises, including manufacturers, banks, contractors, and other business entities, and has experience in several receivership matters. Ms. Shikai has experience in state court as well as federal court, including appellate court cases at both state and federal levels, and has also represented creditors in bankruptcy proceedings.

Ms. Shikai has successfully prosecuted and defended actions at trial, including an action for specific performance of a contract for the sale of a large commercial real estate property in downtown Los Angeles, and an action for intentional interference with a business contract. Ms. Shikai’s experience includes the representation of businesses in contract actions; banks in foreclosure actions, contract actions, and bankruptcy proceedings; landlords in landlord-tenant actions; and employers in wrongful termination and other employment actions.

Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Shikai began her legal career as an attorney at the law firm of Christensen, Miller, Fink, Jacobs, Glaser, Weil & Shapiro LLP and obtained extensive civil litigation experience in a variety of areas, including class action defense in civil rights matters, business litigation, construction defect litigation, environmental nuisance litigation, insurance, and arbitration. Her experience includes the representation of a well-known talent agency in the Writers’ Cases, a class action which involved allegations of age discrimination against studios, networks, and talent agencies, as well as the representation of other high-profile clients.

Ms. Shikai received her Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from Southwestern University School of Law, and was a member of Southwestern University Law Review, during which she received the Law Review Bluebook Award for Outstanding Editing. She also received the CALI Outstanding Achievement Awards for Survey of Federal Income Tax, Legal Research, and Writing.

Ms. Shikai has written several articles, including “Applying the California Translation Act to Consumer Agreements” (Los Angeles Lawyer, September 2012), and “Don’t Be Swept Away by Mass Hysteria: The Benefits of Human Reproductive Cloning and Its Future” (Southwestern University Law Review, 2004).

Ms. Shikai is fluent in Japanese. She is also a 6th-degree black belt in kendo (the martial art of Japanese fencing) and was a member of Team USA at the 10th World Kendo Championships. She is also a proud past winner of U.S. Women’s Kendo Championship.
